Her artwork is featured in: Art: African American by Samella Lewis, African American Art and Artist, also by Samella Lewis, Black Art in Louisiana by Bernardine B. Proctor and the St. James Guide to Black Artists, by Thomas Riggs. Her works are in the following collections: Absolut Vodka, Morris Museum of Art, Augusta GA; Alexandria Museum of Art, Alexandria LA.; The Coca Cola Company, Atlanta GA.; Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, Atlanta GA, and The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. She has two commissioned outdoor murals in Atlanta GA, one on Auburn Ave. (2007), and another on White Street (2009). Malaika is also a poet, her publications include: DREAMING AT THE MANOR, Finishing Line Press 2014, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT, published by New Orleans Poetry Journal Press, 1991. Malaika won the 2015 Broadside Lotus Press Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award for her collection of poems, ASCENSION 2016. Her method is to respect the wood by following the grain of the wood to reveal the images that the wood is narrating. As the story unfolds, the grain changes and this is illustrated with the use of colors and hues. Along with the wood, the silk takes on a journey of color and collaboration. Through silk, the conversation of the wood is reinterpreted. "I have always reacted and interacted with color to define the context of my understanding. Wood speaks to me. When I work with wood, the grain tells me how to flow and I just bring out what is already there. I am just a story teller. After a severe car accident in 2012, I had lost my ability to see colors, to connect with the world around me or even have the confidence to pick up a brush. As I learn to regain my life back, my artwork has been the source of my healing. My art helps me daily in learning how to cope with PTSD and TBI, communicate my thoughts to others, and find joy in redefining myself. Silk painting has created a new chapter to my journey." Petrouchka is a first generation Haitian-American; born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She currently resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she teaches silk painting and operates Vivre Studios. Cultural awareness and expression is a core value that she promotes throughout her artwork.
